  1. And therein lies a problem: conductors became stars and many forgot why they are there. Interestingly, many of those who remain ‘polite’ (as defined by Spohr above) on the podium are seen by the industry as ‘weak’ and often dismissed in favor of the dictators and politically adept. Pity.

    • Star conductors can certainly be a problem if their star power and egos outshine their musicianship. But are there amy more Fritz Reiner style pathological tyrants left?
